Character: Rin Okumura
Series: Ao No Exorcist
Deviance: d1 (p sure)

Age: 15
Gender: Male
Species: Half human, half demon - the son of Satan and a human mother.

Canon Used: anime!

Appearance: this idiot. Yes, this one. This one right here. He's kind of a dope.

Psychology: Rin Okumura is, hands down, a shounen anime protagonist. He is brash, immature, headstrong and incredibly hot-headed, but at the same time, he manages to have a heart of gold and the best of intentions. It just might be a bit better if he happened to know how to use his brain. (not his head - he uses that. physically speaking, anyway. by headbutting a problematic demon once. ...ahem.)

At first glance, Rin is a punk of a kid - with a penchant for getting into trouble and a pretty bad reputation. We are introduced to him while he throws a punch at some other punk, getting himself a little roughed up in the process. His twin brother has to treat his wounds. His adopted father mentions that he can't seem to hold down a part-time job. The other monks in the monastery all make little quips about how much trouble he is - how immature he still is, and how unlike his accomplished, intelligent and hard-working brother he is. ( "For twins, the two couldn't be more different!" ) It would be easy to assume that he's nothing but a brash child with no real future to speak of.

That couldn't be farther from the truth. Paying even the slightest bit more attention past the surface reveals that Rin really is kindhearted, really does care... he just isn't that great at acting on it using more, uh... conventional methods. That fight he got into? It was because the other punk was shooting pigeons in the park, and Rin couldn't stand to see innocent birds suffer. The grocery store job he couldn't hold down? He was fired for being "violent and reckless", yes, but if he hadn't chased after the demon (that no one else could see) and shoved a small child out of the way of a falling tower of heavy boxes, that child would probably not have made it out of the situation whole. See? He cares. He was raised right, no matter how much he acts like the problem child in the classroom.

That headstrong, violent, hot-headed streak of his isn't exactly a front, though. He really is that... well... demonic. He is the son of Satan, after all. Literally. In fact, it's his demonic heritage that makes him so prone to chaos - internal or otherwise. The poor boy grew up not knowing his own physical strength, for crying out loud, and it ended up being pretty problematic, to say the least. Since Shiro Fujimoto raised him as a human child and never told him anything about his birth, he never really understood why he seemed to be so different. When teachers would make derogatory quips about how he must be a demon's child, it would bother him, and he would swear up and down that he wasn't a demon and it wasn't his fault -- but at the same time, he would wonder what was wrong with himself. Why wasn't he like everyone else? Why couldn't he keep a lid on his temper? But Shiro would just tell him that he was normal - that he was himself. And... honestly, that really was good enough for him. But if only he knew, right? Well, if only he'd known before the shit hit the fan, so to speak.

Despite all of his showboating, the fact that he runs his mouth a lot and always seems to think pretty damn highly of himself (when he's not angsting and sulking about not being the best exorcist ever - yet)... he has quite the soft spot for others. He never really had friends growing up, so whenever someone even remotely gives him the time of day, he's quick to attach himself - subconsciously, granted, because he always seems surprised when those who consider themselves his friends actually come right out and say it, or do anything even remotely resembling proper teamwork. But once he has friends (and realizes as much), he is very supportive of them. Protective, too! He will go out of his way to keep the people he cares about safe, even if it means throwing himself into the line of fire. Literally, even. Oh look, something big and scary is going on a rampage and everyone's stuck? Well, here, let him jump right in the fucking way and get himself smacked around so the others have a chance! ... Yep.

That protectiveness and supportive attitude extend doubly to his (younger) twin brother, Yukio. He has always been there for him - has always stood up for him when he needed it (since Yukio was kind of a crybaby as a child), is quick to reassure him that he's going to grow up to be the best doctor ever, if that's what he wants to do. He has nothing but confidence in Yukio, and all the love in the world for him. He doesn't know where he would be without him, either. And, after the death of their father... they're all each other has in the world - the most precious thing to each other. It's a bond he doesn't take for granted. He'd rather die than let anything happen to him. Insulting Yukio will cause him to fly off the handle, plain and simple. ( "You can say what you want about me - but don't you dare diss my brother!!" ) Threatening him... well, that will get you killed, if Rin has his way. No one messes with Yukio on his watch. No one. And he's the only one allowed to pick on the mole-faced four-eyed boy, thank you very much~

All of Rin's hopes and ambitions revolve around one central theme: he wants to defeat Satan. Yes, that Satan - Lord of the demons and king of all evil. Also, you know, his "father". Rin never calls him that, refuses to acknowledge it. As far as he's concerned, his father is Shiro Fujimoto - the most powerful, most badass exorcist ever. Later, he will learn that his father was a Paladin, the highest-ranking exorcist in the Vatican. Since then, he tacks on the added dream of becoming a Paladin himself - of surpassing even Yukio's badassery (wow, that was a shocker, THANKS BRO) and beating him up the ranks to that very title. He'll stop at nothing!

... Well. Except for the fact that he sucks at school, and studying is what it takes to become an exorcist at all. ... Oops. You see, he passed junior high, but he never intended to go to high school, because he believes that schooling just isn't for him. He hates classes, sucks at taking tests, and is just really bad at all things remotely academic.

Yeah, he's kind of clueless. He has a brain, somewhere in that hard head of his, but it's perpetually off, or something. He doesn't think before he acts, for instance. He also just plain mixes things up, like calling a kracken's ears its "fins." He also fails to remember words sometimes, and gets turns of phrase so completely wrong they're almost difficult to decipher. He's bad at studying, worse at schoolwork - he insists he learns better in the field. Much to Yukio's dismay... ( "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread." )

So when you get right down to it, Rin has got to be the doofiest antichrist in any incarnation.

He is not without his worries, though. He hides the fact that he's a demon (in early canon) from his friends, out of fear that they'll reject him or instantly become afraid of him. Moreover, he's afraid of his own powers, to an extent. Shiro died trying to protect him. Everyone in the monastery was hurt in the process. Hell, he's even responsible for why Yukio was able to see demons from the moment he was born - he's the one who tainted him, by virtue of being a demon himself. That's a big deal for him. He doesn't ever want anyone else to hurt because of him - because of what he is. He has to become stronger, in order to protect them all. This is compounded by the fear that he will be the one to hurt the people he cares about. It's a constant struggle, but... he can do it. He will do it. He's awesome, remember? He's totally got this!

Rin Okumura is going to be the best Exorcist ever, and he's going to beat the shit out of Satan. The world just needs to sit back and watch.

Other Skills/Abilities: Rin owes many of his strengths and abilities to the fact that he is the child of a demon. Regeneration is one of these particular perks: he is able to heal much faster than a human. For example, a battle with a demon left him stabbed through the stomach, but it had already begun to heal up a mere few minutes later. Additionally, he is physically stronger than most kids his age - always has been, even before he ever learned that he wasn't human. He is shown lifting cars, carrying gigantic towers of boxes filled with groceries, breaking ribs with single punches, decimating classrooms even as a small child... And he's still not the best about knowing his own strength, or keeping things 100% in check. He still slips up now and then. Apologies in advance if something on the Plane ends up broken.

Rin definitely knows what he is, at this point - no way around that. As if the whole reveal wasn't devastating and traumatic enough, he now has a(n awesome, if you ask him) tail to hide and a nice set of fangs. Still, the majority of his demonic power is stored in his sword, Kurikara. So long as it remains sheathed, it's not quite so obvious (yes it is, but hey, suspension of disbelief). However, drawing Kurikara surrounds Rin in blue flames, and fully releases his demonic nature/form. In canon, blue fire is the signature of Satan. Rin has inherited these blue flames, in all of their all-consuming glory (and extra-flashy light show potential~). Even while still in his "human" form, if he gets pissed off enough, the flames will flash around him. And yes, they burn - a lot, and hard, and quick. Devastatingly so. At his current canon point, Rin is still pretty freakin' awful about controlling his flames - will only consciously/actively use them if he does not need to worry about collateral damage or anything of the sort. Because he knows that's exactly what's gonna happen. He has been shown in canon going off the deep end in human form, and immediately reacting with, "Oh, crap! Calmdownselfcalmdownohgodohgod...!" And that worked, at least. The same cannot be said for if that sword is drawn. The flames can potentially consume him, turning him violent, irrational and nearly mindless in his pursuit of destruction.

That sword... He may not have had it long, but he's learning how to swing it, and already putting it to as good of use as he can. He's competent - no master, surely, but far from just some dopey kid swinging a stick around and hoping to get lucky. Still, in a pinch, he'd rather rely on his own strength and maybe even his fire... at least until he masters his swordsmanship. (one day... maybe...)

And, completely separated from combat (except during a particular "showdown" against a particular demon)... Rin is an exceptional, incredible and downright amazing cook. It's often joked that cooking is his one and only useful talent~ He's been at it ever since he was a child, since no one in the monastery could cook worth a damn. He's pushed himself to get better and better ever since, and now, many advanced tips, tricks and techniques that take time and talent to perfect are just second nature and culinary instinct to him. He's proud of his cooking, especially if others enjoy it.

Other Weaknesses: Most of his weaknesses are covered in "personality", and they mainly revolve around the fact that he's... dumb. Sigh. So, moving on from that:

He is your typical speedy swordsman. He hits fast and hard, and it's difficult to actually catch him, but if you do, it will hurt. It's not that he has shitty defense, he just isn't exactly armored or anything like that. He may have demonic accelerated healing, but a heavy blow is still going to knock him square on his ass and leave him stinging for a while.

Mentioned in the abilities section: he's not in total control of his flames yet. So, that's likely to cause problems. Blue fire burns very hot, very quickly. His flames can kill people. The sooner he gets a handle on them, the better, but... that may or may not be a long time coming.

As a demon, he can be burned by sacred things - holy water. Anti-demon weaponry. Etc etc.

I'm also pretty sure if you put him in a flame retardant box he would be pretty much SOL. But. That should go without too much saying.

Canon Point: After episode 06: "The Phantom Chef"

Reality Description: In Ao no Exorcist canon, existence is split into two realms: Assiah and Gehenna.

Assiah is the human world - the material world. It's everything you and I know. Earth, space, the universe... etcetera. The most important thing to note is that demons are real, and the people need exorcists to keep them safe from demonic influence and to expel the demons from this world, back to where they come from...

...Gehenna. It's the other side, the demonic realm. Described as being "like a mirror" to Assiah, Gehenna is a reality inhabited entirely by demons, beings who thrive in darkness, corruption and the like. This is the world where Satan is lord.

The only way a demon can set foot into Assiah is by possessing anything that exists within it, living or not. Conversely, the only way to travel to Gehenna from Assiah (though why would you want to...?) is to use a Gehenna Gate, which is a creepy hellhole. Literally. Generally, demons want to escape Gehenna and get into Assiah in order to spread chaos, cause trouble, do some horrible things... you know, the things that demons do.

Now, let's narrow it down. Specifically, Ao no Exorcist takes place in True Cross Academy, which is an incredibly prestigious school located in True Cross Town, situated in Tokyo, Japan. It is a ~normal school~, on the outside, but it is also host to a "cram school" for exorcists in training. It is run by the True Cross - a global organization of exorcists under direct control of the Vatican (yes, that one). For all intents and purposes, True Cross Academy is the Japan Branch of the True Cross.

The True Cross is very highly organized. They started off as a militarized group some 2000 years ago, and they have been the strongest, largest and most effective group of exorcists in the world ever since. Exorcists have ranks - the lowest of which is a page (hasn't even passed exams yet) and the highest of which is the Paladin. This is an incredibly coveted title, as there is only ever one Paladin at a time. All exorcists have a focus (or two, or however many) as well: Knight, Dragoon, Doctor, Tamer and Aria. Knights excel in combat with swords, Dragoons with guns. Doctors have the knowledge to heal wounds or other afflictions that demons may cause. Tamers actually tame demons or spirits to fight for them (Tamers are said to be very rare). And finally, Arias are exorcists who have memorized bible verses known as "fatal verses" for various demons - weak points that can expel a demon by recitation alone.

Not everyone in Assiah can see demons. In fact, very few can. In order to actually see them, one must be infected with a "temptaint" - a wound or disease that a demon may inflict on a human. Once this happens, that human will be able to see demons for the rest of their life. As such, receiving one's temptaint is an obvious stepping stone and sort of a rite of passage for all exorcists. Rin was his own temptaint, obviously, being the Son of Satan. He was also responsible for his brother's, having given it to him while they were still in their mother's womb. Yes, this means Yukio has been able to see these things all of his life. Always. Scary, huh?

So, tl;dr - Our world, with a ~demonic realm~ lurking on the ~other side~, with exorcists and stray demons and the like in the meanwhile.

First Person Speaking Sample:
[Whoever that kid was, the one covering her face and giving Rin absolutely no answers to actually work with, is so gonna start talking! NOW!

That's Rin's motivation for coming back to the mysterious little shop - pretty much immediately after leaving the first time, really, because he's not one to stand for a lack of answers to his questions about something as important as showing up in freakin' outer space!!

Except he doesn't enter the shop. He's back in space. ... For about one second, he realizes he probably should have been expecting that, but then he gets distracted by the Plane itself. And he immediately gets dizzy.
]

N-Not this agaaain--!

[But he manages to steady himself, slinging his sheathed and covered sword from his back and bracing himself with it until he can sort of get a handle on up and down while he's standing here. There's a solid floor after all, right? So what if it's invisible? Ugh...! He lets out a huge, audible exhale as he scrubs a hand through his hair. His next expression is a scowl, as he look all around and tries to spot that hooded little kid.]

Okay, where'd that brat go? Hey!! Who's here?! C'mon, I know someone can hear me! Are you even listening?!

[Silence. One second, two, three... And then he growls, annoyed and petulant.]

Tch. Figures. Well, since I'm here, I guess I'll just have a look around myself!

[Mind made up, he slings his sword back onto his shoulder, starts walking forward. Because forward is as good of a direction as any, right?]

There's gotta be something else around here, huh? I mean, why would it just be a bunch of stars and nothing else?

[A little more walking, a lot more silence... And it's all just way too much for him to handle! So he lets out another growl, throws his head back and yells!]

Aaugh!! What even is this place?!?

Third Person Writing Sample:

- In which the Okumura twins are lazing on a Sunday afternoon. Cue Queen song. /shot!
- In which fighting occurs. Flames included. Lots of flames. Seriously.
- In which Rin is a self-sacrificing idiot. What else is new.
- I have plenty more. If this isn't what you're looking for, let me know.

Did you read the rules? at some point, several times over.
